It was announced on 30th April 2018 by the Government that they will be reviewing the requirements for carbon monoxide alarms in homes in England and examining whether existing legislation remains suitable as well as considering reforms. Since 1st October 2015 (Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarm (England) Regulations 2015) properties occupied by tenants must have a carbon monoxide alarm fitted in every room which contains a solid fuel burning combustion appliance. This is the responsibility of the landlords and their agents. It is also a legal requirement for landlords and agents to make sure each alarm is in working order on the first day of the tenancy. A smoke alarm is also required to be on each floor of the property on which there is whole or part living accommodation.
It is best practice to have a carbon monoxide alarm fitted in every property & we highly recommend this to our landlords.
The review will address whether alarms should be required for all methods of heating, including gas and oil, the cost of alarms and new research into deaths caused by Carbon Monoxide. The government review will also discuss whether the cost of alarms is affecting installation rates and will look at new research into the number of carbon monoxide poisonings.
